Because of Banned Books Week, my Writer’s Studio will be pushed back to next Friday.

So I attended Catholic School from 1st to 8th grade. We visited our school library and took advantage of the bookmobile (yes! the bookmobile – one of the original “magic buses.”) Some of the books that were in my school library that I loved and had an impact on me are listed below. All book covers are the ones I remember from my childhood.

Are You There, God? It's Me, Margaret Julie of the Wolves by Jean Craighead George Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry by Mildred D. Taylor
  • Are You There, God? It’s Me, Margaret by Judy Blume
  • Julie of the Wolves by Jean Craighead George
  • Watership Down by Richard Adams
  • Anne Frank: Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank
  • Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry by Mildred D. Taylor
  • A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle

There are more, but this is a good start. These books were in my school library. I read them. I loved them. They moved me and changed me and expanded my world. Each one of them has been censored or banned at one time or another. Check your school library. Are these books there? If not, would they be if introduced to the decision makers?
