Productivity Semi-Fail

November 13, 2018

“Give me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe.”
~ Abraham Lincoln

Last week I was excited to try a new way of being productive. You can guess by the title of this post how it went for me.

The above quote by Abraham Lincoln is why I was excited to put the calendaring idea into practice. If I have a lot of time, sometimes I squander it. Not always, but it does happen. So last week I was ready to make my time as productive as I could.

The Preparation

I spent Tuesday afternoon diligently creating a schedule for Wednesday and Thursday. I had it all blocked out. Seeing my tasks for each day down on paper at specific times was motivating. I woke up Wednesday excited to go for it. And then—

The Reality

Wednesday. Something came up that I had to deal with in the morning. I got home and readjusted my schedule and started working. Things were moving along and then my mother-in-law, who lives with us, fell down and hurt herself. Luckily a friend and helper was over so between the two of us, we got her up and into her room.

I readjusted my schedule again after my friend offered to take my mother-in-law to the hospital to get her hand checked out which was such a gift. (She got the cut cleaned and wrapped and was home in no time. Whew.) I got a little more done, but not much because then it was time to stop and get ready for some guests for dinner—which was on my schedule. 🙂

Thursday. This day went well and on schedule for the most part, mostly because I had an all-day critique meeting. I did get some work done prior to the meeting which was on the schedule. Yay!

Friday. I forgot to write up a schedule for Friday! Sheesh. I did some work, but nothing that felt super productive.

So definitely mixed results, but I’m glad I tried. I’m going to keep working at this and see how it feels.

Next week I want to write about ebbs, flows and creative blahs so look for that.
