Jumpstart #7: Read What You Wrote

Posted by on October 29, 2012

INTRO: Every Monday is Jumpstart Monday so I will be trying out things to help me get into my writing for the week; hopefully these will help you too.

When I have trouble getting into the groove, I go back and read part of the story or book. Here are different ways I re-enter my novels and what they can do for me.

  • Read a chapter or scene just prior to where you want to start writing. This gets me right back into where I left off and is a great jumping off point.
  • Read a chapter or scene you think is really good. I often do this to give me confidence, to remind myself that I can write a good scene so when I get to a brand new one, I’m primed to write it.
  • Review your summary/elevator pitch/log line and/or outline if you have one. Hopefully this will remind you what you’re story is about and spark a new scene, piece of dialogue, or something you want to add about a character.

I’m going to review my semi-outline and see what comes out of that!
